The Appalachian Studies Academic Program remains dedicated to supporting the campus population during the developing COVID-19 situation. We are actively practicing social distancing, which means we remain open for business, but we are limiting the number of students, faculty, and staff on campus. We are working to provide assistance virtually. The Appalachian Studies Academic Program, in partnership with the Center for Appalachian Studies, coordinates curriculum, research, and community engagement relating to the Appalachian Mountain region. Through course work, collaborative research, and mentoring, students acquire a broad understanding of the Appalachian Mountain region and develop applied skills that translate academic learning into careers and regional service.
At the graduate level, we offer:
- Master of Arts in Appalachian Studies with two concentrations:
- Appalachian Culture and Music
- Sustainability in Appalachia
- On-campus Graduate Certificate in Appalachian Studies

Past Event: International Mountain Studies Symposium
On March 12, 2022, the Center for Appalachian Studies, in partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of International Education and Development , brought together mountain studies scholars from Austria, France, Scotland, Switzerland, and Wales. They joined Appalachian State faculty and students for a one-day scholarly exchange of research about the Appalachian Mountains and other mountains around the world. The symposium concluded with an evening reading of Appalachian literature; performances of traditional music and dance; and a square dance.
